Why Laraine Newman Was Absolutely Terrified Of Joining The Cast Of 'SNL'

Everyone who has ever worked for Saturday Night Live owes Laraine Newman an enormous debt of gratitude. Everyone who was in that unique cast merits the best of praise. They went thru the door first and stored it open for many years. They set the tone. They laid the groundwork. While there may be some dark reasons why the show was originally successful, so much of it has to do with the work of the likes of Gilda Radner, Chevy Chase, John Belushi, and Lariane Newman.

But in keeping with an interview Laraine Newman did with Vulture whilst selling her memoir, the acclaimed comedian was actually terrified of joining the cast. Here's why...

How Did Laraine Newman Get Cast On Saturday Night Live?

Laraine Newman's mom actually did not need her to enter show business. But she didn't have much of a decision. At the age of 4, Laraine principally assured herself a slot in the entertainment industry when she blew other people away on Kids Say The Darndest Things. She had a gift for the gab and was specifically funny... even as a child.

  • Laraine Newman studied improv and mime in highschool then continued to review mime under Marcel Marceau in Paris, France.

When she were given older, Laraine pursued a stand-up career and even co-founded The Groundlings, a comedy troupe in Los Angeles that managed to win the attention of a host of large names in the business. Among them was Lily Tomlin and future SNL author Lorne Michaels.

While Laraine had no clue that her stand-up paintings at The Groundlings would land her any such life-changing job at SNL. After all, SNL didn't even exist again then. Before it did, Lorne Michaels was running on a unique for The Lily Tomlin Show. Both he and Lily changed into big fans of Laraine. One night time, after one of her sets, Lorne introduced himself and the relaxation is historical past.

"I had no big-picture perspective on things. I was just putting one foot in front of the other, which I don’t recommend. I didn’t know I was auditioning for The Lily Tomlin Special or SNL when I was at the Groundlings. I didn’t know Lorne was in the audience. I was just doing this thing that was, for me, a way to not feel so alone. Because the characters I wrote were highly personal, and when those got laughs it was such a wonderful feeling. Sharing perspectives with people was the most gratifying thing. I had an identity," Laraine informed Vulture.

Why Laraine Newman Was Terrified Of Being On Saturday Night Live

Saturday Night Live wasn't the rest when Laraine joined. It would take a yr or two for it to truly become what we all know and love lately. But in her interview with Vulture, the actor/comic claims she was actually uncomfortable with it to start with. Not as a result of the other people were not great, however as a result of everybody was principally a stranger. At the beginning, she did not even suppose she had a lot in not unusual with them with the exception of a love of comedy.

"I had come from a company [The Groundlings] where I knew everybody and I felt supported, acknowledged, and known. I didn’t know anybody at SNL. Meeting Chevy Chase for the first time was scary. I have that in [my] memoir: We had found out that Tom Schiller had lupus, and Chevy was pontificating about what he saw as the future of the show. He said, 'Years from now … of course, you won’t be there, Tom.' I was so young and so inexperienced. I was making my way. I just really felt I was always at a loss and trying to prove myself each time."

Laraine ended up turning into really shut friends with many of the original cast contributors, including Gilda Radner who she was also fairly competitive with. But the hurdle of getting used to something completely other was still one she had to clear. Fortunately, she had her large step forward second in "The Godfather Group-Therapy" caricature in 1976.

  • SNL's "Godfather Group-Therapy" Sketch featured guest-host Elliot Gould and debuted in the first season of the show.

"The Godfather group-therapy sketch [featuring Sherry, the Valley Girl stewardess] because my character’s monologue was something I wrote. It landed, and that gave me some cred. Even though I felt like I was always odd man out in terms of what to do with me, if someone wrote something with a character that no one had ever seen before, and I could rise to that occasion and score that way, that also gave me momentum and helped me gain some confidence," Laraine defined.

Of path, Laraine has gone down as one of the perfect Saturday Night Live cast contributors, albeit not one of those with the highest net worths. Regardless, every one that has been cast on the show since she left has needed to creep out from her shadow. This is one thing she likely never expected to occur when she was performing at The Groundlings all those years in the past.
