Ahead of the unofficial season 5, Badgley stated that Jonathan's clean slate would possibly not ever trade Joe.

"I don't think anything truly profound has changed Joe. I think that part of what the show is doing is showing that he’s never really looking at himself. No matter what happens, actually, he seems to be incapable. It is hard for anybody," he informed The Hollywood Reporter in February 2023. "And then once you've done some really terrible things, it's even harder."

"He seems to be positioning himself to make a different change, but everybody is, of course, always wondering when the other shoe is gonna drop. Like, it's Joe," he explained further.

In previous interviews right through the past seasons, the former "fake newscaster" had all the time warned fanatics that Joe would never get a joyful redemption arc. "He's among the worst," he informed Buzzfeed in January 2020. "I think there needs to be a real sense of justice, not for Joe, but for us in this world that has been created. That probably means Joe will be unhappy because he's constitutionally unhappy."

Like Joe's lovers, Badgley is also excited about his character's advanced character. We are all exploring something earnestly, I think," the actor mentioned of the bookstore owner during an interview with Salon in February 2023.

"But of course nobody has a perfect perspective, so if there's any place where it's really got some blind spots, well, that's Joe, frankly. That's OK. So, in a way, I really like that."

The Stepfather megastar also said Joe's being an "unreliable narrator," which makes him think his persona will have to eventually die. "It's like we can dig in and not worry about having a perfectly protected stance, because at the end of the day, Joe is an unreliable narrator and a despicable human being," he stated.

"So, just because he's thinking it and saying it, doesn't mean that we think it's right," he persisted. "But he is getting at something, and of course people can identify with that.
