In an interview with Vulture about her 2000 film Bedazzled, Elizabeth Hurley discussed her many career changes, including thoughts on her biggest flops and disappointments. But many believe Serving Sara, her film with Matthew Perry, as the moment things began to go downhill.
Following the reasonably successful Bedazzled, in which she co-starred with Brendan Fraser, Hurley was anticipated to pass on to good stuff. Instead, she took roles in a number of less-than-well-received films till 2002's Serving Sara. Aside from one small film, Hurley did not work again for eight years. But this wasn't due to a big career downfall. Instead, it had to do with her want to get started a family.
"I got pregnant. Then I had my baby and retired for eight years. I didn’t work at all," Elizabeth Hurley explained to Vulture. "I moved back to England, and I started [her swimwear company] Elizabeth Hurley Beach, which I still do. I did one other movie after I had my son, which was an independent movie [called Method] shot in Romania."
Hurley said she discovered it tough to have her child, the nanny, and her mom onset while she used to be making the movie. It additionally stopped her from spending enough time with her son.
"I never saw my son. On my one day off, I was so tired and had to learn all my lines for the next week. I thought, This is not a life for my child. Knowing there was a chance I’d never come back, I said, 'I can’t do it. I’m going to wait until he’s 8.'"
After 8 years, Hurley used to be able to return to the business she loved.
"I feel incredibly privileged and lucky that when I said, 'Okay, I can come back to work again', I could and did."
But Hurley informed Vulture that she had some hassle finding her position in the industry after her hiatus...
"When I came back, I was in my 40s, which is a time when you’re not offered a ton of work. You’ve left the leading-lady age group and you’re looking at mom roles," Hurley admitted to Vulture.
"Some of it is personal luck, but also, the way the times have moved, people are more interested in hearing stories from all age groups. It’s just not as young-centric as it used to be. You have great TV shows, whether it’s Ozark or Dead to Me, where people my age are protagonists leading these fabulous stories. That’s contributed to the fact that since I’ve gone back to work, I’ve worked nonstop."
But while Hurley has certainly labored non-stop since returning to the trade, her area of interest has changed considerably.
Is Elizabeth Hurley Happy Making Christmas Movies?
After 8 years of mainly now not running, Elizabeth Hurley found herself in a brand new stage of her career. Currently, she is among the queens of the Christmas rom-com. This comprises her work in Christmas in Paradise, Christmas in the Caribbean, and Father Christmas is back.
"There’s so much fabulous TV and movies available at home," Elizabeth Hurley explained to Vulture of the change in her filmography. "This has a lot to do with streaming. It tended to be that young people went to the cinema and older people tended to stay home more. So many movies were driven toward that young and often male market, and now I think everyone is seeing that there are a ton of people who want to watch all sorts of stories."
Hurley went on to say that while TV movies used to have a nasty recognition, things have changed significantly since she started getting cast in them.
"It’s opened up a whole new avenue for my generation of women. It’s no longer just mummies and daddies slapping food in front of the kids who go off to have an adventure while they tie an apron around their waist," Hurley said right through her interview. "Plus there are more female writers, directors, and they’re not going to write screenplays with nine males to one female part. I think that’s a sign of the times. I’m benefitting from it — and I’m loving it."
