During her interview with The Hollywood Reporter in June 2023, Karen Allen faced questions about why she wasn't in the unique two equal films, 1984's Temple of Doom and 1989's The Last Crusade.
"When I signed up to do Raiders of the Lost Ark, they said to me, 'We’re making three of these films. Whoever plays Indiana Jones will be in all three, and the Marion Ravenwood character will only be in the first one because we’re going to go backwards in time,'" Karen Allen said to The Hollywood Reporter. "It’s interesting that people have always been very indignant on my behalf that I wasn’t in the second and third films, but that had never been the original plan."
Although this rationalization didn't exactly account for why Marion wasn't in The Last Crusade which in fact takes position after Raiders of the Lost Ark when the two get together.
"But I was totally surprised when I learned there was going to be a fourth film," Karen Allen stated to THR. "I did know that there was going to be a fifth. When we finished shooting the fourth, there was already talk about there being a fifth and perhaps final episode. So, yes, I was always imagining I would be in it — and I am — but it’s just in a slightly different way than I had imagined."

"I like to mix it up. I like to explore. That’s what actors do. We find the real joy and inspiration of what being an actor can be by stepping into very different shoes."
So, while Allen may not have capitalized on her Raiders of the Lost Ark popularity in some way that propelled her career, she no doubt made an artistic choice that brought happiness to her existence.
But when she were given the decision for 2008's Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Allen leaped at the probability to play Marion Ravenwood again.
Because of how her persona ends up in the finale of Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Allen totally believed that she was going to get a choice a couple of 5th film.
"I think there was already talk about wanting to do another film. So, no, I assumed that I would be a part of the next film.
